Pawling is one of the prized treasures of Dutchess County. While most of the County has been growing at an exponential rate, Pawling has remained rather stable. This is due to two limiting factors - The Great Swamp, and the mountains on each side of the town.

Quakers from England came to Pawling seeking religious freedom. They settled in the hills east of Route 22; in an area now know as Quaker Hill. Quaker Hill has become the stomping grounds of the rich and famous. It is almost exclusively occupied by large prestigious horse farms, and opulent millionaire estates.

Construction of homes in the western portion of the town has been limited by the mountainous terrain. So the Village of Pawling and the majority of Pawling residents live in the center of the township. This is not a setback, as an abundance of parks and recreational facilities, the Appalachian Trail, community Theatre, numerous Historic sites; and the Dutcher Golf Course are all close at hand.
